A student came to his Zen master, agitated and full of questions.
He said: “Master, my mind is restless, clouded, confused. How can I see clearly? How can I find peace?”
The master did not answer directly. Instead, he led the student to a pond nearby. He filled a cup with water from the pond, stirred it vigorously, and placed it on the ground.
“Look at the water,” the master said.
The student watched the water swirl — muddy, opaque, impossible to see through. After a few moments, the master said:“Now, wait.”
They both sat in silence.
Gradually, the sediment in the cup began to sink to the bottom.
The water became clear.
